As such, websites that are not mobile responsive will suffer greatly in terms of SEO ranking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens when mobile-first indexing is completely implemented?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Google, 70% of all websites in search results have already been shifted to mobile-first indexing. So there\u2019s a huge chance that your website has been switched over too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After September 2020, Google outlined what will happen once the mobile-first indexing is completely rolled out:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawling activities for Google Search will be primarily done with their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobile smartphone user-agent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They will, however, continue to occasionally crawl using their traditional desktop Googlebot.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google will update its index to your website\u2019s mobile version, and you will notice an increase in mobile crawl rate from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Googlebot Smartphone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google will predominantly show mobile-responsive websites in search results, and non-mobile-friendly sites will very likely be devalued.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know whether your website has been shifted to mobile-first indexing?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your website has been shifted over to mobile-first indexing, Google will send you an email to notify you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7875 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ilfusion.org\/dev\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Google01.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Google Search Console: Mobile-first indexing enabled\" width=\"670\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ilfusion.org\/dev\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Google01.png 670w, https:\/\/ilfusion.org\/dev\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Google01-250x105.png 250w, https:\/\/ilfusion.org\/dev\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Google01-120x50.png 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, you can check through two other means:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manually check on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">settings page<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Google Search Console. Select property, then choose <\/span><b>Settings \u2192 About \u2192 Indexing crawler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should be able to see \u201cGooglebot Smartphone\u201d and the date of when the switch started.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Google\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">URL Inspection Tool<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ensure that Googlebot can access your content\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful when using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robot.txt<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; make sure that you\u2019re using the &lt;allow&gt; directive where applicable so that crawlers can access and render your website content.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Minimize lazy-loaded content<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazy-loaded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> content are those that are considered non-critical UX elements and are deferred by requiring user interaction such as swiping, tapping, or typing. This is considered as one of the best practices for better UI\/UX performance, but if not implemented correctly, it could impede Google from accessing essential and primary content. Here\u2019s how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/lazy-loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>fix lazy-loaded content<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Ensure content consistency<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content shown on the desktop and mobile versions of your website should be consistent. This includes images, text, videos, links, headings, and more. Additionally, all meta and structured data should also be the same for both website versions.
